Fall Academy Classes and Productions

The Magik Theatre offers a variety of programming to meet the arts education needs of San Antonio-area youth, including weekend and after-school classes, holiday and summer camps, and special workshops. Classes are taught by professional, experienced Teaching Artists and provide a culminated sharing for families to attend. Class Details and Schedule

The Magik Theatre is now offering two opportunities to join our Academy. Students can choose to participate in our 12 week semester during the Fall or Spring semester.  Each class will hold a final sharing for families to attend. Fall Academy begin the week of September 7, 2019 with a final showcase to occur during the last class period during the week of November 23, 2019. Spring Academy will begin the week of January 11, 2020 and conclude the week of March 28, 2020.  Showcases will be created based on the type of work and ages that each class is focused on and will be held at the northside Magik Performing Arts Center. If your student is looking for more advanced hands-on experience, try our full length production lab. The Junior Production of Frozen will begin on September 7, 2019 with performances scheduled to be held downtown at The Magik Theatre on December 6-7, 2019 This class is open to students ages 8+.  Auditions will determine student’s role in the cast. Students are encouraged to enhance their skills with participation in one of our skill based Academy Classes.

Our Teen Repertory Company for ages 12+ will be mounting a production (TBD) in the Spring, with rehearsals beginning January 11, 2019, and performances to be held April 3-4, 2019. More information coming soon.

If the student is new to the Magik Performing Arts Center, they may try an available class. If the student elects to continue with the course, the prorated tuition must be paid in full before the next instructional day. This year, we are offering a new Rolling Admissions Policy: new students may try-a-class and join up to the first three weeks of a semester. Exceptions may be made at the Instructor’s Discretion. Classes cost about $22.50 per class meeting.

If the class is a production lab (i.e Mainstage Junior/Teen Rep), late enrollment will be handled on a case-by-case basis and requires permission from the Director of Education and production’s Director.

The Magik Theatre offers private or small group lessons in various types of arts education including voice, acting, and musical theatre.  Please contact us for more information at education@magiktheatre.org

Tuition for Academy classes starts at $270 for our 12 week semester – about $22.50 per class.

Tuition for our special dual-language classes in French and Spanish is $285 for the semester.

Tuition for Production Labs (Frozen Jr. for Fall of 2019) is $460 for the semester.

Class Descriptions

Adventure Tots | Saturdays | 10:30 – 11:30 AM

Tiny Tots will explore the world of imaginative play. Students will learn how to use their imaginations in new and exciting ways in order to problem solve, express themselves, create, and play. Our final day sharing will provide a look into our creative process. 

At Magik’s House | Mondays | 10:30 – 11:30 AM

Be Creative. Be A Character. Be On Stage! Get ready to create a brand new play with your classmates. You’ll use ideas from stories and fairy tales to come up with a great show. From brainstorming to performance, our actors will find themselves challenged and intrigued. 

Musical Theatre Beginner | Mondays | 4:30 – 5:30 PM

Musical Theatre I is designed to introduce and develop musical theatre skills, including dance for theatre, partnering, acting, character development and chorus singing. 

Musical Theatre Intermediate | Mondays | 5:30 – 6:30 PM

Musical Theatre II is designed to dig in deep to the world of musical theatre, including dance for theatre, partnering, acting, character development and chorus singing. 

Acting 101 | Saturdays | 10:30 – 11:30 AM

Be Creative. Be A Character. Be On Stage! Get ready to learn the fundamentals of performance. Students will focus on monologues and short scenes. From brainstorming to performance, our actors will find themselves challenged and intrigued.

Acting 102 | Saturdays | 11:30 AM – 12:30 PM

Continue to grow, Be Creative. Be A Character. Be On Stage! Students with previous training in performance will take their skills to the next level and focus on group scenes and characterization. This intermediate class will help prepare students for full scale productions!

Acting 102 | Saturdays | 11:30 AM – 12:30 PM

Continue to grow, Be Creative. Be A Character. Be On Stage! Students with previous training in performance will take their skills to the next level and focus on group scenes and characterization. This intermediate class will help prepare students for full scale productions.

Make-A-Movie | Saturdays | 11:30 AM – 12:30 PM | Ages 8+

Students will learn the skills needed to create a movie. From writing, directing, acting and editing, this class will focus on the aspects of filmmaking.  Lights, Camera, Action!

Learning French Through Theatre | Mondays | 5:30 – 7:00 PM

Learn French language through songs, games, and by taking on the role of different characters in a play, and at the same time learn beginning acting techniques and basic script analysis skills. The course culminates in a final showcase performance for parents. The course is taught jointly between Culturingua and Magik Theatre. No previous knowledge or experience with French or theatre is required. 

Learning Spanish Through Theatre | Tuesdays | 5:30 – 7:00 PM 

Learn Spanish language through songs, games, and by taking on the role of different characters in a play, and at the same time learn beginning acting techniques and basic script analysis skills. The course culminates in a final showcase performance for parents. The course is taught jointly between Culturingua and Magik Theatre. No previous knowledge or experience with Spanish or theatre is required. 

Production Lab: Frozen Jr.

Saturdays 10:30 AM – 12:30 PM | Thursday 5:00 – 7:00 PM

Your student will take center stage in this full scale production lab. From learning the art of auditioning, to being cast in a role, students will rehearse this full length production and become characters and engage in the world of theatre. The cast will perform at The Magik Theatre utilizing a professional set, costumes and production design.

Musical Theatre Beginner | Mondays | 5:30 – 6:30 PM 

Musical Theatre I is designed to introduce and develop musical theatre skills including dance for theatre, partnering, acting, character development and chorus singing. 

Technical Theatre | Mondays | 6:00 – 7:00 PM

Students will learn what it takes to work backstage. With the help of an experienced theatre production manager, they’ll learn about how to costume, light, build, design, and assist the tech crew with putting things together for the final showcase! 

Acting 101 | Tuesdays | 5:00 – 6:00 PM

With Magik’s professional actors as their guide, this advanced class will continue to build and improve performance skills. Students will work cooperatively to create a repertory company that truly reflects its members’ interests and personality.
