Magik has brought Shakespeare to the people of San Antonio for 11 years.
Shakespeare on the River at The Arneson Theatre in La Villita will be November 16-18, 2017.
The Magik Theatre, San Antonio’s professional family theatre, presents Shakespeare on the River – a FREE event celebrating all things Shakespeare.
Theatre-goers can come early to enjoy food trucks along Villita Way and short Shakespeare performances by local performers. The highlight of this event is Arkansas Shakespeare Theatre’s The Taming of the Shrew. The company returns to San Antonio for a second year, having performed Twelfth Night at last year’s Shakespeare in the Park. Performances of The Taming of the Shrew are November 16, 17 and 18 at 7:30 p.m.
“Grab a seat close to the stage as AST transports you back to the lively and colorful days of old world Italy, where embracing adventure, music, and above all, passion was a way of life. Through a flurry of song and spectacle, join the rambunctious and arrogant Petruchio in his quest to woo the unimpressed and headstrong “Kate the Cursed.” Inspired by Italian traditions of puppetry and commedia dell’arte, our players bring the audience right into the middle of the action. So come ready to play–we can’t tell the story without you!”
- Half-hour Shakespeare scenes by local high school students starting at 6:30 each night.
Half-hour musical pre-show starting at 7:00 each night. The The Taming of the Shrew starts at 7:30 and will end around 8:45 each night.
Become a VIP – You’ll receive reserved seats, free gifts, food, drinks and a private meet and greet with the cast!

They will pass the crown on to this year’s royalty, Denise Smith-Schlaudt and Kenneth Lee Schlaudt, Jr., who will advocate for Magik’s mission of literacy and education through theatre.
Denise moved to San Antonio in 2001, and immersed herself in the culture and community of the area. She has taken her fundraising talents and successfully been recognized by the following organizations as follows: 2015 Leukemia and Lymphoma Society- “Woman of the Year”, Lo Bello Women’s Association- “Participating Member Organization Fiesta Commissioner”, Platinum Top 50 Realtors- “2015 Philanthropist of the Year”, San Antonio Builder’s Association- “2015 Humanitarian of the Year”. Denise has been fortunate to be the recipient of many awards and accolades throughout her career, but her happiest accomplishment was her marriage in 2016. Ken has happily supported her efforts and has successfully coordinated many campaigns and events as the silent pillar behind Denise. Together, they have set up and started their own foundation; Support for Life Foundation. You will find both of them supporting many notable charities and always lending a hand to anyone in need.
