X-celerated Teaching Artist (Part Time)

The Magik Theatre is looking for enthusiastic theatrical teaching artists to teach theatre education with At-Risk-Youth facilities across San Antonio. The instructor will work with a group students for 16 weeks, helping the residents develop an original work for a performance. The mission of the X-celerated Theatre program is to incorporate theatre into the folds of the counseling that the youth already receive, supplying them with strong writing, communication, teamwork, and leadership skills. The teaching artist will be responsible for implementation of technically aspects with support from The Magik Theatre technical staff. This is a part time paid position with a travel reimbursement.

• Must be 18 years or older
• Must be able to pass a rigorous background check
• High School Diploma (GED or better)
• Must have Interpersonal Communication Skills
• Must have Theatre Training – Directorial experience a plus
• Experience working with at risk youth a plus

The Magik Theatre is the number one choice for many families in San Antonio for arts education and entertainment.  As San Antonio’s only professional theatre company our commitment to the community is paramount. To this end, our education program serves over 1,000 students each year and reaches out to students of all ages and backgrounds.  Teaching Artists and Interns are essential team members in this success. 

During the school year, The Magik Theatre operates an Acting & Creativity Academy program for students aged 3 years to 17 years. These programs take place at The Magik Theatre at 420 S. Alamo Street in Hemisfair Park. Typically, these programs serve about 200 students over the school year. Each of the classes has a specific thematic focus while teaching The Magik Theatre’s core values of creativity, confidence and teamwork. Teaching Artists and Interns must be available and willing to work between 9:30AM and 12:30PM each Saturday morning for the duration of the semester which runs September 20th and concludes with a final performance on December 13th.  All major scheduling conflicts (vacations, alternative employment) must be noted within the original application to be honored without a deduction in pay.

Teaching Artists and College Interns are paid a stipend.  High School Internships are unpaid. Ideal candidates would be able to commit for the entire semester.

Specific Duties Include:
• Planning, preparing for and leading daily activities
• Assisting in the planning of integrated lessons.
• Utilizing the resources of the theatre to provide a creative and stimulating environment for campers.
• Directing the final performance and providing closure after each session

• Supporting lead teaching artists in daily activities
• Assisting in the needs of the Administrative Staff, Specialty Teachers and Lead Teachers
• Organizing supplies and taking inventory of supplies needed
• Assisting in the final performances and after each session

APPRENTICESHIP (Grades 10 and Up)

Love the world behind the curtain? Our Technical Theatre Apprentices will have access to training from our professional technical staff; technical director, master carpenter, scenic painter, sound and light designer, and stage manager as well as insight into the backstage aspects of a working theatre. This is an application only program and will require attendance multiple times a week. We are looking for young people who are seriously considering technical theatre as a profession and all applicants will undergo a strict interview process.
