Tickets to Literacy
One of the greatest challenges schools face today is providing students with a complete and balanced education under the constraints of increasingly limited budgets. Many districts have had to cut programs. The most frequent casualties? Art, music, dance, and theatre.
As San Antonio’s only full-service, professional repertory company, we understand the power of live theatre — its ability to create new worlds, to transform literature into something that lives and breathes. We at Magik feel a responsibility to ensure these experiences for the children of our community — in short: to keep the arts in education. That’s why we established Tickets to Literacy in 1996.
Tickets to Literacy is a program that underwrites ticket costs for schoolchildren. Every time a child attends The Magik Theatre, we incur an operational cost of $10. Yet no child who visits our theatre pays that. Thanks to ongoing support for Tickets to Literacy, Magik is able to offer low group rates of $3.25 to $4.75, as well as specially-discounted and free tickets.
During our 2009-2010 season, over 57,000 area children attended The Magik Theatre through Tickets to Literacy, a total subsidy of more than $400,000!
Our ultimate goal is to be able to bring all children to Magik free of charge. To this end, we reach out every year to a growing number of government sources, foundations, corporations, and individuals to garner new support for Tickets to Literacy.
You, too, can be part of Tickets to Literacy, a program that has underwritten tickets for over half a million children to date.
